Our client, a machine shop in Arlington Heights, seeks a Quality Manager to lead their QC team. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for overseeing all quality assurance and inspection activities within the grinding operation. The Quality Manager leads a team of approximately eight quality professionals—including Zeiss CMM programmers/operators, quality engineers, and QC technicians—while ensuring compliance with ISO 9001:2015 standards and customer requirements.
You will work closely with production, engineering, and supervisors to resolve quality issues, drive continuous improvement, and strengthen the company’s quality systems. This position is ideal for a proactive, detail-driven quality leader who thrives in a fast-paced, high-precision manufacturing environment and takes ownership of team performance and long-term quality success.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily leadership, direction, and support to the QC team across all production shifts
- Supervise, train, and mentor CMM programmers, quality engineers, and QC technicians to ensure consistent, accurate inspection practices
- Oversee all dimensional inspection activities, including CMM programming/operation, roundness gaging, profilometry, and other precision measurement methods
- Ensure timely completion of first article inspections, in-process checks, and final inspections
- Review and approve inspection reports, capability studies, gage R&R, and other quality analyses
- Manage and maintain all quality documentation, including calibration records, nonconformance reports, corrective actions, and audit files
- Lead internal ISO 9001:2015 audits and coordinate external audits with customers and certification bodies
- Drive root cause analysis and implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
- Collaborate with production supervisors and engineering to resolve quality issues and improve process capability
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing variation, improving throughput, and enhancing product quality
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe inspection environment
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customer quality concerns, audits, and technical discussions
- Support supplier quality activities, including incoming inspection and supplier corrective actions
Job Requirements / Qualifications
Required
- Proven experience in quality management or senior quality engineering within a precision machining or grinding environment
- Strong knowledge of dimensional inspection methods, GD&T, and metrology principles
- Hands-on experience with CMMs (Zeiss preferred), roundness gages, profilometers, and other precision measurement tools
- Demonstrated leadership ability with experience managing technical teams
- Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
- Experience with ISO 9001:2015 quality systems and audit processes
- Familiarity with PPAP, SPC, capability studies, MSA, and gage R&R
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Preferred
- Experience in grinding operations (ID/OD, surface, centerless, etc.)
- Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher)
- Experience with APQP tools and customer-specific quality requirements
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
